The EVERSHED family NEWSLETTER

(Please see the Evershed Family Reunion Invitation Form)

No 18, 1 December 1998, by Terence Roy Evershed (Q/21)

Is it really a year since the last newsletter?

No,I have decided to produce one every December, this should make the updates for the year passed easier to control, and it enables me the opportunity to wish everyone a

" MERRY CHRISTMAS". and a prosperous" NEW YEAR"

Plans for Fifth EVERSHED family REUNION are being organised. I am pleased to say the response has been promising with 120 persons so far attending. Your updates have been received as well .THANKYOU . With your help the master charts are up to date, keep sending them in. I have attached the invitation again, just in case one wasn't received with the previous newsletter The mailshot was taken from the October 1997 address list supplied by PBE. Addresses change all of the time, so this newsletter will be sent to everybody on the October 1998 address list .This list is worldwide and many people over many years have accumulated names and addresses of the cousins .Please send me your new address, E-Mail and WWW. Many a time I have heard people say, Oh ! I lost contact with that side of the family 20 odd years ago I wonder what they are doing now! ! ! Don't be afraid to communicate before it is too late. For those who have never been to one of our Reunions before,I will tell you about the previous one's. Usually the elders namely John Dendy EVERSHED J/19 talks on how we became Evershed's. Are we Engiish ? Did we arrive with William the Conqueror from France ? Does our name have a meaning? Ever- res- heved means" Wild Boars Head" in Anglo- Saxon . We are fortunate to have to head!!.Other families in Ockley and surrounding areas, have been called Hogsflesh or Mutton ,names linked with us over hundreds of years . We can only speculate why we are named after a "Wild Boar".At this time Ockley, was heavily wooded and the wild boar roamed free with deer and other wild animals. Peter Bernard EVERSHED MBE L/21 has talked on his incredible input of data on to computer over the last 20 years. He has published his works and we must all be grateful to him for dedicating so much of his life towards the history of the EVERSHED families.

Bryan William EVERSHED E/20 from Switzerland, specialises in the ancient EVERSHED's and has found old documents in the most unIikely places .His contribution to the family tree has been immense. He is contactable through E-Mail, <bryan.evershed@bluewin.ch>   In Switzerland. We always have plenty of family memorabilia to view and should you wish you bring along your own exhibits please feel free.Usually the weather has been kind to us ,we will provide drinks and sandwiches etc outside in the marquee .Otherwise if wet, there should be room inside the hall. For those who prefer a pub lunch, there are several old English inns within walking distance. I enclose a list of accommodation .Please make your own arrangements. Early bookings are recommended. For those arriving by road, Billingshurst is approx 20 miles south west of Gatwick Airport. The easiest route is the A29 from Horsham or A29 from Pulborough ".Stane Street" as its called runs through the centre of Billingshurst. This was of course the old Roman road. The nearest train station is Billingshurst a few stops down the line from Horsham. The Womens Hall is directly opposite the Unitarian Chapel in the High Street. People will be arrivlng from 10.00am onwards through to about 16:30 hrs. The following day, Sunday 18th July the 244th Chapel Anniversary Service will begin at 15:00hrs. The Chapel was founded by William Evershed and William Turner in 1754. Its also happens to be William Eversheds 200th Anniversary of his death.

All denominations will be warmly received.

Terence.
